I think that the book of Songs of Solomon or Song of Songs from the bible is totally fascinating, with lots to learn from, as is the case with every other book from the book of books.
In my view, this is a multi-layered book.
As I peel through the layers, some of the threads unfold themselves.
In one layer, the deep, unyielding and tender affections of our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ for His Bride, the Church, His body is exposed to us.
It expresses the intricate nature of our Lord’s love and desire toward us. It shows that really, our walls ( our affairs) are ever before Him.
He is consistently interested in the seemingly minute details of our lives, down to a single strand of hair on our heads and the state of our physical bodies which He wonderfully and fearfully created.
He is our Potter and we are His clay. He will continue to mold, remake and sculpt us into that which He ultimately wills for us.
Furthermore, it exposes the quality and ecstasy of His love and the pleasures of living and thriving in His presence now in this realm and the world to come.
Another layer and storyline walks us through the affections, desires and sensual love of a King for his lovely bride. Some of the narrative is an exploratory map and profile of the beauty of his future bride.
He talks about the length, gracefulness and litheness of her neck. Describing her breasts as clusters of dates. There are intricate details and descriptions of specific components of the chalice he calls her body.
He dwells on the bending and smoothness of her lips. And continues on with more details.
It’s also a description of their deep love and desire toward each other and some of the conflicts encountered.
They both express their intention to lodge and spend time in the village delighting in each other’s presence, love and desire.
I would go as far as saying that sections of this book could serve as a guide, roadmap for engaging in the art of intimacy and sensual pleasure between a bride and her groom as designated by He Who created humankind and gave us the gift of romantic and sensual pleasure as practiced within the boundaries of marriage according to His will, in His Word.
An excerpt, from the Message translation in Chapter 7 goes thus:
“The feelings I get when I see the high mountain ranges —stirrings of desire, longings for the heights— Remind me of you, and I’m spoiled for anyone else!
Your beauty, within and without, is absolute, dear lover, close companion.
You are tall and supple, like the palm tree, and your full breasts are like sweet clusters of dates.
I say, “I’m going to climb that palm tree!
I’m going to caress its fruit!” Oh yes!
Your breasts will be clusters of sweet fruit to me, Your breath clean and cool like fresh mint, your tongue and lips like the best wine.
Yes, and yours are, too—my love’s kisses flow from his lips to mine. I am my lover’s. I’m all he wants. I’m all the world to him!
Come, dear lover— let’s tramp through the countryside. Let’s sleep at some wayside inn, then rise early and listen to bird-song.
Let’s look for wildflowers in bloom, blackberry bushes blossoming white, Fruit trees adorned with cascading flowers.
And there I’ll give myself to you, my love to your love!”
Song of Songs 7:1-9 MSG
Such alluring and direct words of poetry that capture the gift of romantic love, desire and beauty between a man and his female bride as designed by the Timeless One and delivered to His creatures, humankind.
In time, I will circle back to this book of Songs and gain more insight and illumination into the Person of our King of Kings, The Christ.
Selah!
